This tape has meant a lot to me over the years, and I’m happy to share it here. When I got home, I subjected everyone I knew to the Trixie’s Big Red Motorbike songs, and ultimately covered “That’s The End of That” in the band I joined shortly after coming home.
I listened to it the whole rest of my trip. Near the end of the interview, Jane gave me a mixtape that included unreleased solo recordings, songs by friends and influences, and (on the B-side) a selection of samba and Tom Waits. While I was there, I interviewed Jane Fox, formerly of the Marine Girls and Grab Grab The Haddock, for my zine, Caught In Flux. In the fall of 1996, I went to the UK for the first time. The New Pornographers – The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism The Shutdown song in particular, a demo, has been a personal favorite for a long time. Many obvious choices here, but hopefully a few you haven’t heard before. Jesse Garon & The Desperados – The Adam Faith Experienceīuba & The Shop Assistants – Something To DoĮvery Mother’s Son – Come On Down To My Boatīen Vaughn Combo – My First Band (cuts off) It served as the background music for at least one party, and I’ve continued to dig it out and play it once every few years. It’s a great mix of the well-known and the obscure, with a special focus on Scottish and Olympia, WA indiepop. It has a cool title its cover is a flyer from a London club night there is a tracklist written in perfect penmanship and the contents are wonderfully eclectic.
(She played in Comet Gain for a long time, and perhaps still does.) It’s everything a good 1990s mixtape should be. Of these, probably my favorite was from Kay, a British musician who’d stumbled across my zine. I liked writing back and forth to readers. Some backstory: By 1997, my fanzine was well-known enough that I was getting reader mail from Japan, England and Australia. The Shirelles – Dedicated to The One I LoveĪstrid Gilberto – So Nice (Summer Samba) (cuts off) Indifferent Dance Centre – Flight and PursuitĬilla Black – Surround Yourself with Sorrowĭexy’s Midnight Runners – Seven Days Too Long Or, more accurately, “Music That (Mostly) Sounds Like Young Marble Giants.” Lots of cheap drum machines, minimal guitar parts and basslines, and unadorned vocals.
– Radio Free Europe Dub (Cassette Set version) Peter Holsapple – Bad Reputation (solo version) Sad Lovers and Giants – Alice (Isn’t Playing)Įcho & The Bunnymen – Pictures on My Wall (drum machine version)įor the 50th episode, we once again return to the world of ’80s jangly pop. Robert Rental and Thomas Leer – Monochrome Days Perfect for your summer barbecue, beach party or croquet match.
The Sugargliders – Give Me Some ConfidenceĪ selection of twee, indiepop, and related music. More twee, indiepop and generally summery sounds.ĭevine & Statton – Turn The Aerials Away From England Rakim (Kid Wizard) and Biz Markie – Live at Wyandanch High 1985 The Greer Brothers – We Don’t Need No Busing (The Busing Song) Larry Sands & The Sound Affair – If I Didn’t Want To See You Anymore Includes Rakim (then called Kid Wizard) live at his high school, introducing his famed “I take seven emcees…” rhyme ’90s cassette-only releases by Skylab (Olympia, WA) and Admiral (Toronto) some Numero Group stuff and one of my favorite Buzzcocks deep cuts. Thanks for listening! – MikeĪ short mix of random styles. I invite you to check out the below mixes and give feedback. What I do have, though, is a Mixcloud account, an Audacity audio editor, and records and MP3s. I don’t necessarily want to be the evening’s entertainment, but I really enjoy playing music in between the bands and setting the mood. More recently, I have occasionally DJ’d concerts. As a college student, I used to do a weekly show on WRSU-FM, and also did fill-ins on nearly WPRB-FM. Two things I have always loved: making mixes and DJ’ing.
